The collection may be one of the highest-profile launches on Ordinals to date.

The company behind the world’s most dominant non-fungible token (NFT) collection Bored Ape Yacht Club, Yuga Labs, has revealed plans to launch its first-ever Bitcoin-based NFT project later this week. The company announced on Monday as it looks to jump on the Bitcoin NFT wave.

According to the announcement, Yuga Labs said it will release an NFT collection named “TwelveFold”.

Yuga Labs Shares Details of New NFT Collection Based on Bitcoin

The collection, which is minted on the Bitcoin-based Ordinals protocol, will be made up of 300 limited-edition generative art NFTs developed by Yuga Labs.

Interestingly, the art pieces are all placed on a 12×12 grid – a visual representation of how data is being stored on the Bitcoin blockchain. And even more, they will combine 3D graphic features and some hand-drawn elements.

For what it’s worth, the collection appears to be one of the highest-profile launches on Ordinals to date. That is since the protocol launched last month as a way of committing artwork to Bitcoin. Essentially,  each art is permanently attached to an individual Satoshi or 1/100,000,000 of 1BTC.

Meanwhile, it is also worth noting that Yuga Labs might have deviated from expectations with its new project. That is because Yuga Labs’ empire is built upon the success of its blue-chip BAYC collection, which lives on the Ethereum blockchain. Similarly, every other project ever made under Yuga also currently resides on the leading network for NFT projects.

However, the company has now established that its upcoming collection will not come with extended utility. And on top of that, it will have no affiliations whatsoever to its existing Ethereum-based collections.

Admitting the deviation, the co-founder of Yuga Labs, Greg Solano, appears to suggest that there’s no fun in doing the expected. He said in a blog post:

“All of these choices are a departure from what’s expected from Yuga. But, you know. F**k doing expected things.”

The size of the TwelveFold collection is another notable feature that sets it apart from Yuga’s past projects.  Usually, Yuga-owned collections consist of 10,000 or more NFTs. So, with TwelveFold having only 300 pieces, the new approach is more like Larva Labs’ approach to its Autoglyphs project.  The Ethereum-based project has only 512 NFTs.
